Maples in Your Garden

Elaine Sedlack will be speaking about the Westonbirt Arboretum in England which has the species and Japanese maple cultivar collections.  Elaine is a terrific resource for lots of cool plants. She was at the UC Botanic Garden Berkeley for many years as a curator of plant collections.

Japanese maples can have stunning fall colors
Chapter Meetings feature interesting topics, interesting speakers, and fun activities. We regularly include door prizes, special sales, refreshments, and laughs. Elaine Sedlack’s talk on the species and cultivar maple collection at the U.K. National Arboretum will also include her visit this fall to this well-known arboretum; she considers the National Arboretum (Westonbirt) a Mecca for tree people, and Westonbirt also has a good rhody collection, but she will focus mostly on maples for this talk. It is an historic account of the development of the property which has only been under the purview of the Forestry Commission for a relatively short time. She will show both Japanese and species maples and a few other fine specimen trees. It is a beautiful place and well worth a visit for all lovers of woody plants.

From the arboretum website:
Westonbirt Arboretum comprises some 18,000 trees and shrubs, over an area of approximately 600 acres(2.4 km˛). Its 17 miles (27 km) of marked paths are popular with visitors, and provide access to a wide variety of rare plants.

An annual April Flower Show and Sale is a great time to show off what is blooming in your garden, look at what is blooming in other members gardens, get plants identified, create a wish list, win trophies (you do not need to be a member to win), and select from specially purchased plants.

A very fun Fall Propagation cutting party and potluck is the highlight of the year. Members bring cuttings from their own gardens to share. Everyone is invited to take cuttings from the host member's garden. Long-time growers help ‘newbies’ select, prepare, and create cuttings. Rooting media, pots, and labels are provided.
